Community Yard Sales A Huge Success

Area residents hunted for bargains at community yard sales.

The hosted its Annual Community Yard Sale event on Saturday, May 7 from 8:00 a.m. to noon in the LRPRA parking lot.

This year, beautiful weather and a large variety of household items attracted the hardiest of bargain hunters.  Although the association posted a memo in its newsletter banning early birds, yard sale enthusiasts browsed the premises as early as 6:50 a.m.

The event was bittersweet for best friends Jennifer Gray and Jennifer Hutson of Lake Ridge.  Hutson and her family are relocating this summer to Frederick, Md.  Getting rid of unwanted household goods was a necessary part of the moving process.  By combining Gray’s management skills and Hutson’s bargaining savvy and friendly demeanor, the two friends were able to maximize their profits.

Erica Allred, a former Lake Ridge resident now living in northeast Italy, came to the event to sell the entire contents of a storage unit.  Allred sold all of the children’s toys and furniture she offered at the sale.  Only a few books and small items remained at noon.

“It’s hard to let go of memories, but seeing to whom the items now belong makes it a little easier.  A lot of kids here were so happy to get new toys,” she said.

Most sellers remained past the noon deadline to pack up their things, while buyers continued to browse last-minute deals.  The Annual Community Yard Sale will be held next year on May 12, 2012.

The association leases parking spots for $15 to LRPRA members and for $20 to non-LRPRA members.  Spots sell out quickly every year, according to Recreation Director Shirley Couteau.

also hosted a large community yard sale. Members of the church and community donated clothing and household items to the church for this sale. All proceeds were slated to go toward missions projects coordinated by Ruth Anderson, wife of State Delegate, Rich Anderson.

Ruth Anderson said they have participated in various overseas missions trips, including a recent trip to Indonesia.

Dawn Teale who was volunteering at the yard sale reported that they had sold hundreds of items of clothing to one woman- enough to cover six banquet tables- and these would be shipped to help clothe families in the woman's native African country.

"How neat that clothing purchased at a sale to support missions work will be going for missions work," Teale said.

Teale also added that anything not sold at the sale would be donated to local agencies that support Prince William County's needy.
