Edgemoor Studio in Lake Ridge, a New Art School for Kids, Opens its Doors

Owner Ruth Johnsen applies a holistic approach to teaching art.

Edgemoor Art Studio, a unique new art school in Lake Ridge that applies a holistic approach to art and creativity, has now opened its doors.

Owner Ruth Johnsen, a former school teacher of 28 years, began the business by giving art lessons in her home studio, but has now moved to the larger location at 12616 Lake Ridge Drive.

Johnsen, believing that children are creative by nature, plans her curriculum by aiming to expand that natural creativity. Works of art by the students are showcased within a private gallery right inside the studio.

"Top priority is the essential need for children to have many opportunities to question, think, brainstorm ideas, and make art through the creative process," Johnsen said.

The Edgemoor Studio offers a variety of art classes for children 2-15, as well as phonics classes where students apply a method of sounding out words in order to help them become better readers. Enrollment is $200 for 12 weeks of one hour long courses, and includes art supplies. Also offered are seasonal classes that are two hours long and cost $25.00.
