UPDATE: Independent Candidates Qualify for Ballot in Congressional Races

Northern Virginia voters will choose among Democrats, Republicans and Independent candidates in congressional races come November.

UPDATE (3:45 p.m.) The State Board of Elections confirmed today that Chris DeCarlo and Mark Gibson, running in the 11th District, were verified with 1,000 signatures each earlier today.

“I can’t thank everyone enough: Friends, friends of friends, neighbors, colleagues, and complete strangers,” Gibson said in a news release. “These are all voters who want to get involved in our political process, giving voters a greater number and more diverse selection of candidates for Congress.  Getting on the ballot is a strong victory for democracy.”

Independent candidates running for Congress had until June 12 to turn in 1,000 signatures to get on the ballot in November. Some candidates are still waiting to hear if they are on the ballot and others are confirmed. Here's an update on Independent candidates running in the 8th, 10th and 11th congressional districts in Northern Virginia.

8th Congressional District: One Democrat, One Republican, Two Independents

Jason Howell: An Arlington author and motivational speaker, Howell has collected more than 1,000 signatures and will officially appear on the Nov. 6 ballot as an Independent candidate, according to the Virginia State Board of ElectionsThe Federal Election Commission reports that Howell’s campaign had received $5,261 in contributions as of March 31.

Howell announced his official candidacy in an email to supporters this week: “Congratulations to so many of you who have helped make this happen,” he said. “You made the civic-minded decision to participate rather than turn away. Now the real campaign begins.”

Janet Murphy: Realtor Janet Murphy will also appear on the ballot as an Independent Green Party candidate in Virginia’s 8th Congressional District. The Virginia Board of Elections confirmed Thursday that Murphy had collected the necessary 1,000 ballot petition signatures. Murphy ran as an Independent Green Party candidate for the 48th District of the Virginia House of Delegates in the 2011 election.

Murphy and Howell will be on the ballot with incumbent Democrat Congressman James P. "Jim" Moran and Republican J. Patrick Murray.

10th Congressional District: One Republican, One Democrat, One— Possibly Two—Independents

Kevin Chisholm: Environmental consultant/engineer Kevin Chisholm of Arlington will also represent the Independent Green Party on the ballot in November, according to the Virginia Board of Elections. Records of any campaign contributions were not available from the Federal Election Commission.

Anthony Sciortino is trying to qualify for the ballot, according to the Fairfax County Office of Elections.

Chisholm and possibly Sciortino will run against incumbent Republican Congressman Frank Wolf and Democrat Kristin Cabral.

11th Congressional District: One Democrat, One Republican, Two—Possibly Four—Independents

Incumbent Democrat Gerald Connolly, in addition to facing GOP challenger Chris Perkins, will be up against two, and possibly four, Independent candidates this election season.

Chris DeCarlo: Independent candidate Chris DeCarlo of Fairfax is in the process of having his candidacy verified with the necessary 1,000 signatures, according to the Virginia State Board of Elections. DeCarlo campaigns through rap video, two of which can be found on his website. He is expected to release a third video in September.

It's his second bid for the seat: He ran unsuccessfully in 2010 against Connolly and Republican Keith Fimian, earning 0.81 percent of the vote.

DeCarlo also campaigned in 2011 for chairman of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, and earned 24.73 percent of the vote in his race against Del. David Bulova for the 37th District seat in 2009.

Joseph Galdo: Electrical engineer Joe Galdo, a resident of Fairfax County, has self-financed $461 for his own campaign as of March 31, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. The Virginia State Board of Elections confirmed that Galdo will appear on the Nov. 6 ballot representing the Green Party.

Mark Gibson : Fairfax small businessman Mark Gibson’s candidacy is in the process of being verified in Richmond, according to the Virginia Board of Elections. A June 18 post by Gibson on his website said that his campaign had gathered 1,412 ballot petition signatures. According to his site, Gibson has spent $4,321 on his campaign as of June 15.

“As we wait for validation of 1,000 voter signatures, I just want to thank you and tell you how appreciative I am,” he said on his website. “Throughout this effort, my focus has been on issues and offering voters a distinct, independent choice for Congress. That focus doesn't – and won't – change.”

Peter Marchetti: Information technology engineer Peter Marchetti of Springfield has secured the Independent Green Party candidacy with the necessary number of signatures, according to the Virginia State Board of Elections

If someone represents the Green Party, is it really correct to classify him as an "independent"? No. He may not be representing one of the two major parties, but he is not an Independent.

I guess it depends if they will be listed on the ballot with a party affiliation. I don't think both versions of the greens are recognized by the state as a poliutical party for that purpose...

Reality Check

We learned with Steve Stuban that even an excellent candidate with major endorsements has no hope of winning an election in Fairfax County without the support of the Republicans or Democrats. The so-called independent candidates in the 11th District only serve to pull votes away from Chris Perkins and will help the reelection of Gerry Connolly. So have your fun, and spend a little money, but at the end of the day please don't think that anyone is fooled into believing that you have any hope for election. You want change? Start by working from inside the existing structure of Northern Virginia politics.

Well they have about as much chance of being elected as Chris Perkins does...Connolly had his tough race in 2010. His district has been made bluer, and in a Presidential election year no one is going to come close! A good thing from my perspective btw!

Other Independent Green Party candidates - not mentioned in the article - who are especially impressive...and worthy of note... Retired medical doctor Ken Hildebrandt. Dr. Hildebrandt (with his wife Eliane) has worked producing documentaries, and interviews for political change, since retirement. The Indy Green Party doctor lives in Virginia's 5th congressional district - way down south - near the North Carolina border. Hildebrandt and wife love the rural life.

Retired U.S. Air Force Col. Gail for Rail Parker is on the ballot for the Independent Green Party in the 1st Congressional District. Gail for Rail is Virginia's leading advocate for "More Trains, Less Traffic". This is the 8th year in a row the successful businesswoman, mother, and grandmother appears on the ballot for the Independent Green Party.

The Independent Greens are a big tent political party. Led for 11 years by conservative Greens, they include centrists, liberals, and progressives as well. Year after year the Indy Greens have been Virginia's largest on the ballot third party presence. Over the years, many (if not most) of the few hundred local, state, and federal Independent/Indy Green nominees/endorsees, like Gail for Rail Parker (USAF), Captain Ron for Rail Fisher, Col Albert Burchard, Col Marv Pixton have been military retirees and veterans.

Regarding Mr. Daniels point above. The Independent Green Party has been an officially recognized state party in Virginia by the state board of elections for 11 years.
