OPHS Ranks No. 45 on WaPo Challenge Index
OP is the only Prince William County school to make Washington, D.C.-area top 50 list.
The Washington Post published its annual High School Challenge Index on Sunday, May 20. Osbourn Park High School was the only Prince William County area high school to rank in the Washington, D.C. top 50 list, as compiled by Post’s Jay Mathews.

Locally, Manassas-based Prince William County high school Osbourn Park was ranked 45 out of 50 in the top 50 ranking for D.C.-area schools.
The report separately ranks D.C.-area schools, a national top nine percent and state rankings. “The schools that lead the new national list are small magnets and charters that focus on college-level courses and tests,” wrote Mathews in the Post article Sunday.
Nationally, a Tuscon, AZ, school took top billing in the challenge index. No Virginia schools were in the national list.
Mathews’ ranking kept Annandale’s Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology off of the list due to the lack of “average” students. The challenge ranking is a formula based off of advanced placement, International Baccalaureate, Cambridge (AICE) exams and divided by the number of graduating seniors.
"All Prince William County high schools are among the nation’s top high schools that encourage students to take rigorous college-level courses," said a release from Prince William County Schools. "All 10 Prince William County high schools have a rating of 1.000 or above."
Private schools were included in the challenge index for the first time.
