Restaurant Inspections: Subway, Papa John's, Minnieland

Recent inspection reports from local restaurants and food vendors.

ou may want to know how area restaurants performed in their last Virginia Department of Health inspection.

Restaurants in the Commonwealth are inspected between one and four times a year. There are two types of violations: Critical and non-critical. What's the difference? Critical violations, unless corrected, can contribute to "food contamination, illness or environmental degradation," according to the state health department.

"In our experience, it is unrealistic to expect that a complex, full-service food operation can routinely avoid any violations," according to Virginia Department of Health's website.

The site continues: "Keep in mind that any inspection report is a 'snapshot' of the day and time of the inspection. On any given day, a restaurant could have fewer or more violations than noted in the report. An inspection conducted on any given day may not be representative of the overall, long-term cleanliness of an establishment."

They should start putting the inspection codes in the window of the restaurant. They are starting to do this in the some cities. This will help keep the restaurants up to standards. Good standards will keep the customers coming in. It's a win win for both customers and the business.

They used to put a grade in the window. A, B etc, if it failed then closed, but the reason was posted. I do not see the grades in the windows any more, and they need to start that again.

You win first prize. This would keep business's on their toes for fear of being exposed.

That was requirement in my home state, South Carolina. They gave a percentage grade, as well as a letter grade. It was posted in the window. I think the lowest is a "C" I mean anything lower than that needs to be shut down.

I totally agree. The inspection ratings need to be posted to protect the public. Thanks to the Patch for posting this information. As a result of the recent inspection reports, I have taken a kabob restaurant in Gainesville and an Asian restaurant in Bristow off of the list of restaurants I frequent. Both had repeated sanitation violations. How gross! How hard is it to make hand washing facilities available and wipe down the kitchen surfaces?

Donna, I stopped eating at Pho Sapa, on Nokesville Road in the Super Target shopping center after reading the inspections. Also, on my last visit, I tried to get a bottled soda out of their self-serve fridge and every last one was expired! You know those drinks had to be old-I mean it takes months, maybe years for a soda to expire. But there they were, for sale like nothing was wrong. I can't!

Thank you to Patch for posting these results! It does influence my choice when I decide to dine out. Love the idea of restaurants being required to post this in their window - perhaps their average score from three visits, since as the article stated, the VA Dept. of Health says one visit alone may not give a true reflection of the cleanliness of the restaurant.

Hi my Kris! That's true, it should be maybe an average, to be fair. Everybody is entitled to an off day, I guess. But it really depends on the violation. If it somebody is just being slack and nasty, then I'm done! I tried this pho place by my house (see my comment above) and I'm done with them for more than one reason. I'm back to our spot in MP! hahaha.
