Blues outfit "Lisa Lim & Over the Limit" took the stage last Friday at Down Under, the local tavern downstairs from the Occoquan Inn Restaurant. Lim has been playing throughout Occoquan for several years and performs regularly at Down Under. "It's a nice, eclectic place," she said. "The crowd is always fun and appreciative."
Down Under is a small but relaxed bar which doubles as a venue for live music each weekend. A small section of the room by the front door serves as a stage, basically sharing the floor with the audience. The layout of the room creates an intimate atmosphere, so much so that on a few occasions bass player Wolf Crescenze would walk from the stage through the audience to the bar and back while playing.
Based in Fredericksburg, Lim is an established music instructor and teaches private and group lessons. She is endorsed by several musical instrument manufacturers including GHS Strings and KJL Amplifiers, and is involved in multiple musical ventures. Aside from fronting "The Lisa Lim Band" and "Lisa Lim & Over the Limit," she is the coordinator for the Virginia Go Girls Chapter, a national organization that focuses on the promotion and advancement of independent female artists. "I jumped at the opportunity when it came up," she said. "I love the fact that I'm able to offer a platform for musicians to come together, meet, jam and network with one another. Being in this business, you have to embrace one another to have success. And that's what I try my best to do."
A small but supportive crowd came out to Down Under to hear the band, and was treated to an impressive set. Lim and fellow guitarist Tom Maxwell were perfect compliments to each other and took turns belting out amazing guitar licks.
Lim will be steadily performing throughout Virginia, Maryland and D.C. in the coming weeks. Fans can keep up with everything going on through her website.
Coming up for Down Under will be its 2010 Halloween Bash on Saturday, October 30. The event will feature live entertainment by "In Remembrance" and a costume contest, with top prizes including dinner for four at the Occoquan Inn upstairs. Doors will open at 5 p.m. and the contest will be judged at midnight. For further details call 703-490-0904.
