Veterans Day: What's Open, What's Closed

Prince William County has released a schedule of what's open and closed in the area on Veterans Day, which is Monday, Nov. 12.

Sunday is Veterans Day, but Monday is when local school, governments and other organizations observe the holiday.

Here's the county government schedule:

Closed:

  • All Prince William County Government offices.
  • All Prince William County Courts.
  • All libraries are closed Sunday and Monday. Neighborhood libraries close from Saturday through Monday.

Open:

The landfill, from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Nov. 12.

I am very disappointed that the gist of the celebration and recognition of Veteran's Day is centered on where to save a few pennies!

Here is what Veteran's Day means to me:

Happy Veteran's Day. Thanks for all those that gave the ultimate price for America including my father and my brother.

Thanks for those who have broken, mangled bodies that are so miraculously coping with lost limbs and severe scarring -- both on their bodies and their psyche. I hope they find inner peace, happiness and a "normal" life hereafter, filled with love, happiness and lots of children and grandchildren, if that is what they want.

Thanks to all the mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, aunts, uncles, cousins, boyfriends, girlfriends and best friends that ever worried and shed a tear as they watched a brave member of the military turn to take that first step from home towards battle and an uncertain future.

Finally, thanks for all the Shipmates I had over what I can only call one hell of a great 26-year career. We are now a rich, diverse fraternity -- a family that we were not always happy with, but when needed, our training kicked in and we operated as one. When we stood down from the then current emergency, inside we all knew we were doing the right thing -- for ourselves, our families, our Shipmates and our Country.

I give honor to all of our veterans. My father, brother, daughter, husband and others was in the military and they really do not give them the respect they actually should have. We as a country and people has to do better than what is done.
