Woodbridge Man Charged With Leaving Infant in Abandoned Car

The child was unharmed.

Police have charged Nana Akoanor, 48, of Woodbridge, with felony child neglect after an 8-month-old girl was found in an abandoned vehicle that had been left running on Hour Glass Drive in Dumfries, Prince William County police spokesperson Jonathan Perok said.

Police arrived in the area of Periscope Place and Hour Glass Drive on Monday at 1:30 a.m. in response to a report of a possible crash.

"Officers arrived on scene and located an abandoned car, still running, in the middle of the road on Hour Glass Drive," Perok said. "No crash had taken place, however, an 8-month-old girl was found strapped into a child’s seat in the backseat of the vehicle."

Police did not find a driver at the scene. Witnesses told police that they had seen a man running away from the area.

"Through the investigation, officers were able to identify the driver of the vehicle as the accused, who is a family member of the victim," Perok said. "The accused was located at an address on Hour Glass Drive and was found to be under the influence of alcohol."

Akoanor was arrested after an investigation. The infant, who was not injured, was released to family members.

Akoanor was charged with felony child neglect and driving under the influence. His court date is unavailable. He is being held without bond.
