Virginia Republican Party delegates officially nominated Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli to run for governor at its state convention Saturday in Richmond. Cuccinelli, 44, essentially locked down the Republican nomination in November 2012, when outgoing Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling announced he wouldn’t be seeking the nomination. Bolling cited party officials’ vote to change the nominating method from a primary election to a convention as the main reason for withdrawing his hat. Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli is expected to formally accept the Republican nomination for Governor on Saturday morning, delivering a speech at the Virginia GOP's convention. More than 13,000 delegates are registered for the event. As the Republican candidate, Cuccinelli will face off against Democrat Terry McAuliffe in the Nov. 5 general election. The Republican Party in Virginia decided to have a primary in 2013, but later changed its mind.
Virginia’s Republican Party annual convention is set for May 17 and 18, and delegates from around the state will select nominees for Lt. Governor and Attorney General. GOP officials have gone back and forth in recent years on whether to host a convention or conduct an open primary. In 2011, GOP officials had decided to hold a primary in 2013, but a group of newly elected members of the Commonwealth's GOP central committee changed course in 2012 and switched to a closed convention. The switch to a convention saves local governments and the state money — primaries are paid for with state and local dollars, but convention costs come directly from the Virginia GOP’s funds. Republicans say a requirement for picture ID protects "sanctity" of the vote; Democrats argue the GOP is keeping certain voters away from the polls on purpose.
Virginia voters will need a photo ID when they're heading to the polls beginning in 2014 under new requirements signed into law by Gov. Bob McDonnell this week. Supporters argue that a voter registration card with no picture creates an opening for fraudulent voting. McDonnell spokesman Jeff Caldwell said in a statement to The Washington Post that the new law is about protecting "the sanctity of our democratic process.” Democratic leaders have challenged voter ID laws as a type of voter suppression. They note those without a photo ID are likely found among Democratic voters, particularly seniors and college students. Republican Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling took himself out of Virginia's race for governor last week, leaving, at least for now, what's shaping up to be a two-person race. The choice for the Old Dominion's next governor, seven months before Election Day, seems to have boiled down to presumptive Republican nominee Ken Cuccinelli, the state's socially conservative attorney general, against likely Democratic nominee Terry McAuliffe, the former chairman of the Democratic National Committee and a McLean businessman. Reality show star and alleged White House crasher launches gubernatorial campaign website.
Tareq Salahi, the former cast member of The Real Housewives of DC who earned star status when he and then-wife Michaele allegedly crashed a White House state dinner, launched a "Crash the Vote" website Tuesday for his bid for the Virginia governor's mansion. Salahi announced in October he will seek the Republican nomination for governor in 2013. Salahi is not seen as a serious threat, but he is the only contender to go against Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli since Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling announced last week he would not seek the GOP nomination. Remember all those horrible television ads in the Tim Kaine-George Allen race for the U.S. Senate? It turns out not everyone with those campaigns liked them, either. Mo Elleithee, a senior strategist for the Kaine campaign, and Boyd Marcus, a senior political advisor for Allen's Senate bid, agreed Thursday that many of those ads were "total crap." Elleithee said the negative ads paid for by outside groups actually helped Kaine. The two spoke candidly for more than an hour at a Virginia Public Access Project forum at George Mason University's Arlington campus. George Mason political scientist Mark Rozell moderated. Senator tells Associated Press he'll announce decision before Thanksgiving.
Sen. Mark Warner plans to announce before Thanksgiving whether he'll run for governor again, according to the Associated Press. The former governor, a Democrat, served as the Commonwealth's chief executive from 2002 to 2006. Virginia is the only state in the country where a governor cannot succeed himself. Virginia joins Texas, other states in creating a petition to secede from the United States.
In a move that seems to take the idea of red states and blue states one step further, residents unhappy with the results of the presidential election last week are signing petitions to secede from the union. As of Wednesday evening, more than 6,500 Virginians were behind a petition (created on Sunday) to secede. The petition is located on the White House Web site. If seceding from the union sounds like something that happened during the Civil War era, you're correct: Virginia seceded from the union April 17, 1861, after the Nov. 6, 1860 election of another president, Abraham Lincoln.
