Region Under Coastal Flood Watch Starting Monday
Tidal anomalies of one to three feet expected Monday night through Tuesday evening as Hurricane Sandy moves inland over Northern Virginia.
Ahead of Hurricane Sandy's approach to Virginia, the National Weather Service has issued a coastal flood watch from Monday night through Tuesday evening.
The NWS forecast Saturday evening called for a tidal anomaly of one to three feet late Monday night through Tuesday. NWS said the anomaly would be highest near the mouth of the Potomac River.
"Tide levels will also remain elevated during low tide periods," said the NWS forecast. "Moderate tidal flooding [is] possible late Monday and Tuesday."

In addition, there is a full moon Monday night, which may draw tides higher.
A coastal flood watch means that conditions are favorable for flooding. Residents who live near the coast, rivers and streams should be alert for additional flood watch and warning statements in the coming days.
