Weekend Planner: Military Appreciation, Ghost Tours, and Kids Fishing

Get out of the house this weekend with our weekend planner.

Why Go: Head out to the Visitor Center at Leesylvania State Park and learn about the properties of water. Participants will perform experiments, learn what the watershed is, and meet some of the animals that call Leesylvania's water home.

 Where/When: 125 Mill St, Occoquan, Friday July 22 and Saturday July 23, 7:00 p.m.

Why Go: Do you know the ghost stories right in your own community? Come to Old Town Occoquan and enjoy a walking ghost tour of the city. Guided tours are available Friday and Saturday evenings, and group tours of 10 or more people are available by appointment. If you are interested in taking a tour, make a reservation in advance at Polka Dot Divas. The tours last about 1 hour, so be sure to dress appropriately for a lot of walking and being outdoors.

Pricing: $10 for adults and $5 for children 10 years old and under.

Where/When: 6050 Gorgas Rd, Fort Belvoir, VA 22060, Saturday July 23, 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Why Go: Come support the local military! Visitors will enjoy music from 105.9 The Edge, meet celebrities (such as Doc Walker, DC's Favorite Cheerleaders, Potomac National's Slammy), climb rock walls, bounce house, clowns, face painters, balloon animals, food & drinks, fire trucks, car showcase, military equipment displays, and much more. The event is open to the public and will be located between the Fort Belvoir Commissary and Post Exchange.

Where/When: , 12350 Cotton Mill Dr, Saturday July 23, 8:30 a.m.

Why Go: Children ages 5 to 13 years old are invited to Lake Ridge Park for a fishing tournament. Participants will get the chance to compete for prizes such as who can catch the most, largest, smallest, or most unusual fish.  Bait is provided by the park for the children.

Pricing:  $5 per person.

 Where/When: , 2001 Daniel K Ludwig Dr, Sunday July 24, 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Why Go: Come out to Bushey Point Trailhead at Leesylvania State Park and join a ranger for a nice walk along the trail. Enjoy historic sites and points of ecological interest along the way. There will be two one-hour sessions, one starting at 11:00 a.m. and one starting at 3:00 p.m.
