Wine to go with Thanksgiving Dinner

Olde Wine Shoppe in Occoquan gives customers a lesson in selecting Thanksgiving Day wines

There's no better way to start a Sunday than with a little wine. Especially if that wine is accompanied by ham and turkey, homemade cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie.

Such was the Sunday start for the Olde Wine Shoppe in Occoquan on Nov. 14 as owners Emile and Kim Wigode hosted a Thanksgiving wine tasting for long term customers and passerby alike.

A lot of wine myths were dissolved as Kim pointed out that the habits of old really don't apply anymore when it comes to wine.

"It's more about what you like, and what you personally feel goes best with your meal, Thanksgiving or otherwise," she said.

The tasting featured a sparkling rose, two white wines, two dessert wines, and even three red wines that Kim said would go very well with a Thanksgiving dinner.

For those who prefer more specifics about wine and food pairing, here is what the Wigode's suggest, as recommended from the tasting:

Veritas Mousseux-A sparkling rose, pairs well with glazed ham.

Barboursville Pinot Grigio-Dry and crisp, pairs well with poultry.

Veritas White Star- Slightly sweet white blend, pairs well with turkey, and desserts that are not overly sweet.

Loundon Valley Route 9- Dry red, pairs well with ham and pork loin.

White Hall Syrah- Lighter red, a good overall wine with dinner.

Arete Cabernet Sauvignon- Traditional red wine, a good overall wine with dinner.

Gray Ghost- Sweet dessert wine with pineapple and mango notes. Can be served all on its own.

Cooper Noche- Chocolate dessert wine, taste is reminiscent of black forest cake. Can be served all on its own, or with dark chocolate.

All wines mentioned above are from Virginia wineries, and are available for purchase at Olde Dominion Wine Shoppe.
