Gelato is ice cream, but it's the kind of ice cream people can splurge on a little bit. Known as Italy's ice cream, gelato has less than half the butterfat of American ice cream
Ice cream is made by mixing cream with milk and sugar and adding air for density, nearly doubling the amount of ice cream produced. Gelato is not pumped with air, resulting in a richer, creamier product that melts immediately in your mouth.
But maybe best of all is there is no brain freeze when eating gelato because it is served slightly warmer than ice cream, that must be frozen to remain solid.
Tastefully Yours at 406 Mill Street in Occoquan has a large selection of gelato flavors. I tried a scoop of Peanut Butter and Hazelnut and can personally attest to its high-quality flavor. Both scoops tasted great and mixed well together. The texture was soft and creamy and there wasn't any runny melting over the cup like with ice cream.
Sue, who scooped the gelato, was knowledgeable in the flavors and the product. She said the store's gelato is served at the Embassy and customers who have been to Italy told her that their gelato is similar to the real gelato in "The Boot."
Tastefully Yours also has wines, including Chocolate wine that the store owners say will last in the fridge up to six months after opening, a variety of cheeses and snacks and hearty beers, many of which are from micro breweries. Fresh coffee is always available and there is seating in the adjacent room to where the gelato is served. Upstairs are the wines and more beer choices.
The store also has gift baskets, exotic teas, baked cookies and canolis and on Monday there was a small cheese-tasting area.
Tastefully Yours is open every day and there are specials on Friday and Saturday.
