Though the temperature has dipped in the last week, this weekend heralds the return of mild weather and sunshine: the perfect time to work in your garden.
The Farmers' Almanac recommends planting above-ground crops such as tomatoes, beans, peppers, and corn on April 26 and 27, and starting any seedbeds or flowerbeds. April 28 through April 30 are ideal days to weed, the Almanac continues.
The greater D.C. area is in Hardiness Zone 7a, and the Virginia Cooperative Extension has several recommended vegetable varieties for Virginia and helpful tips for container gardening.

If you're interested in planting a garden to attract birds or other wildlife, the Audubon Society of Northern Virginia has several pages, including how to attract songbirds, how to attract pollinators, and how to attract other wildlife.
