Summer Staycation: Occoquan Arts and Crafts

Maybe your wallet's been looking a little thin lately. Maybe you're worn out from attending family weddings and family reunions. Maybe it's time for you to kick back and enjoy a summer staycation.

A staycation is a vacation that involves little to no travel. I personally find most travel exhausting and not worth the time and money spent on transportation, lodging, and food. I like to spend my days off frequenting local businesses, and taking classes, eating at local restaurants, and taking in a local theater production.

Your days off are the perfect time to try out a new hobby, or invest a little more time in a favorite art or craft. And with Woodbridge's and Occoquan's art studios and crafting stores, it's the perfect place to start.

Off the Beading Path offers regular weekend jewelry classes, including ones like an intro to basic beading, a wire cuff, and a bracelet. It also stocks beading supplies for you to practice at home.

The Loft Gallery holds regular classes and workshops. In September, Mill Street Studio will host a class on how to make a drum.

Edgemoor Art Studio offers art classes to kids and teens. On July 27, visit Spiral Creations and watch artist Elizabeth Welker create handpainted jewelry. On Aug. 3, visit Art a La Carte for the Dog Days of Summer exhibit. Bring your pet and get a free photograph of you with your pet, as taken by photographer Jack Nevitt.
