The Pink Bicycle Tea Room

Friendship, conversation, and hospitality on the menu.

On a sunny Sunday afternoon in late October, the Pink Bicycle Tea Room, located at 303 Commerce St., Occoquan, was nearly filled to its 40-person capacity. It was the place where a book club celebrated their 15th anniversary, a mother-to-be was given a surprise baby shower, and a mother-daughter duo sipped tea, ate scones, and tried on hats.

"This is a great place for my daughter and I to spend some quality time together," said Birgit Campana, owner of the nearby Dansk Day Spa at 212A Commerce St.

Born and raised in Kentucky, Lisa Johnson has owned the tea room for the past five years. Prior to that, she was a full-time corporate secretary and worked in the tea room part-time for former owner Donna Lane, who opened the shop in 2001. When Lane was ready to sell, Johnson was ready for a career change. So she bought the business, and has been growing it ever since.

"The tea room is about people who enjoy the art of tea and enjoy conversation and friendship," Johnson said. "The clientele is not just one generation, but many. I get a lot of friends and sisters who haven't seen each other in a while and want to chat."

Though items such as the Queen's Tea and Princess Tea are featured menu items, the ambiance of Pink Bicycle is less inspired by England and, according to Johnson, leans towards an American southern high tea style reminiscent of Kentucky. The menu includes an array of black tea blends, green teas, white teas, South African tea, flavored and scented black teas, earl grey blends, and herbal and functional blends, a la carte items, desserts, and soups and salads.

The Pink Bicycle is actually the tea room's second name. Originally it was known as The Victorian Lane Tea Room.

"Then Donna and her husband were out antiquing one day, and saw two pink bicycles," Johnson recalled.

Residing inside a two-story white house built in 1880, the tea room has three separate dining areas featuring paintings for sale by local artist Peggy Lusk, who also teaches art at the tea room on Monday and Thursday afternoon. The Pink Bicycle Tea Room hours are Wednesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Sundays, 12 to 4 p.m.; Mondays, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and closed Tuesdays.

Reservations are encouraged, however walk-ins are accepted if space is available. The shop is also open for lunch. Catering is also available. For more information, log onto http://www.pinkbicycletearoom.com/
