The 95 Express Lanes project is encouraging eligible community members to apply for trees through a program aimed at restoring greenery to the I-95 corridor. Transurban and Fluor – the private partners on the 95 Express Lanes project, opening in early 2015 – launched the 1,000 Trees in 1,000 Days program in 2012 to help communities along the I-95 corridor recover some of the trees lost due to project construction. Not even halfway into the project’s commitment, the program has already planted, or committed to plant, almost all of the 1,000 trees promised.
To date, 853 trees have been planted at multiple locations along the I-95 corridor by the program’s partner nursery – Dumfries Nursery.
Local communities have been a huge part of the program’s success. Both Boy and Cub Scout troops have assisted with two separate tree plantings – one near a barren section of road in Stafford County and the other at Burke Lake Park. At both plantings, the troops were joined by neighbors, community leaders and elected officials.

Individuals interested in applying for trees are encouraged to submit their applications via the 95 Express Lanes website: http://95expresslanes.com/1000trees.
Applicants can choose from a variety of tree types – red maple and pine oak are the most popular – and can also determine where they want their trees planted. The 1,000 Trees in 1,000 Days program covers the cost to purchase and install the trees.

The 95 Express Lanes team will continue to accept applications until they reach their commitment of 1,000 trees. Applications for awarding the remainder of the trees will be accepted on a rolling basis.
