Guns Vs. Hoses in Charity Softball Game

Second year for fundraiser at Pfitzner Stadium includes Prince William County Police and Yorkshire and Nokesville Volunteer Fire and Rescue.

Although the police and fire and rescue workers may work together on a daily basis, that doesn’t mean there isn’t a little room for some friendly competition now and then.

Thanks to the help of the Class A Potomac Nationals, members of the Prince William County Police and Yorkshire and Nokesville Volunteer Fire and Rescue will get the chance to square off in the second annual Guns vs. Hoses Charity Softball Game in Pfitzner Stadium on August 11.

The game will be a seven-inning contest held at 4 p.m., immediately before the P-Nats face the Carolina Mudcats at 6:05 p.m.

“We wanted to make everyone aware of the work that both the police and fire departments do, giving them recognition, because we know it’s not always given out,” said Devon Hathaway, a P-Nats team spokesman.

Ticket sales will benefit the police department’s Fisher Fund, which supports the families of fallen officers, as well as funding the operations of each fire department.

“It’s just something we all look forward to get away from what we do on a daily basis, and get out here and have some fun and educate the public, and that’s what we’re excited about,” said Yorkshire department Chief Jerry Deem.

Each department will be bringing vehicles and equipment to put on display during the game, in addition to manning information tables for recruitment.

“We don’t do many fundraisers together, but this is a good fundraiser where we can come together in the community and support each other’s fund and have a good time playing softball,” said Sergeant Eric Garza of the police department.

Members of both organizations will also get the chance to step on the field during the seventh inning stretch for a special rendition of “God Bless America.”

“It’s going to be nice to have not just the public, but our respective members of our departments and their families to come out and root and have a little pride in each other’s organizations and spend a little time together,” Deem said.

The police department beat the fire department by 20 runs last year, so each side is hoping for a closer match this time around.

“Everyone’s anticipating a little bit more competitive game this year, and hopefully we’ll get that,” Garza said.

Tickets for the game are available on the Yorkshire department’s website or the police department’s Facebook page.
