Keep Prince William Beautiful Set New Clean Sweep Record

Prince William County, Virginia (May 20, 2014) - Keep Prince William Beautiful (KPWB) hosted its Operation Clean Sweep, sponsored by CSX, event as part of the Keep America Beautiful Great American Cleanup Campaign on Saturday May 10, 2014 from 9 am-12 noon within the forest area of Great Oaks Drive in Woodbridge, VA.

Operation Clean Sweep events are large scale cleanups focusing on areas that have not received cleanups regularly, leading to safety and environmental concerns.  The specific areas chosen are deemed appropriate to accommodate groups of twenty (20) or more people.  Through this program a decrease in the number of littered areas is expected, therefore returning ownership to the community for their upkeep.

Our exceptional volunteer group for this Clean Sweep was the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.  KPWB recruited volunteer Vanessa Sotomayor as site captain to provide litter and recycling education, as well as safety training.  Additionally, cleanup supplies such as gloves, trash bags, vests, and grabbers along with snacks and refreshments were provided.

With approximately fifty (50) volunteers, we collected one thousand nine hundred twenty pounds (1,920 lbs) of litter, debris, and recyclables, breaking our clean sweep record in Prince William County!

KPWB thanks the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Vanessa Sotomayor, and the Prince William County Litter Control Crew for their efforts and contributions to the success of this cleanup event.

If you’re interested or know of any interested parties who would like to take part in our Clean Sweep event as a great community service project, please feel free to contact us and visit our program page at http://kpwb.org/programs/community-cleanups.
