UPDATE: Man Dies After Jumping Out of Third-Story Hotel Window

After jumping, he reportedly hit the hood of a car and then attempted to run into traffic.

Update: The man has been identified as Wendell Bates. He was not from Lake Ridge, as originally reported by police, but from Woodbridge. If you knew him, I invite you to leave condolences in the comments.

Early this morning, a 47-year-old Lake Ridge man reportedly jumped out of a third-story hallway window at the Inns of Virginia at 951 Annapolis Way in Woodbridge.

The caller told police that the man hit the hood of a vehicle in the hotel parking lot when he fell. The man then got up, and ran down Jefferson Davis Highway.

When police responded to the area of Jefferson Davis Highway and Gordon Blvd at 2:29 a.m. this morning, they found the man as he was running near the intersection of Jefferson Davis Highway and Occoquan Road.

The man tried several times to run into traffic, but police held him back. As Fire and Rescue crews arrived, the man lost consciousness. After being taken to an area hospital, he was pronounced dead.

The identity of the victim has not yet been released, as police have to inform the man's family of his death. The cause of death is still being investigated.
