Equipment Explosion Causes Large Power Outage

A piece of equipment on a Dominion Power substation in Lake Ridge exploded, causing a widespread power outage.

Update: Power has been restored to some residences in Lake Ridge.

"We had a piece of equipment on one of our substations in the Woodbridge area blow," said Le-Ha Anderson, a spokesperson for Dominion Power. About 14,500 customers were affected initially, and the number of affected customers is now down to about 5,900 as of 9:15 p.m.

"We are working right now to re-route those customers and we expect everyone's power to be back on within an hour," Anderson said.

Original story: The Fire Marshal is currently investigating a possible fireball near Deepford and Antietam that may be connected to the widespread power outage in Lake Ridge this evening. This might have been caused by the explosion of a transformer.

A resident near Antietam described hearing a huge booming noise right before power went out at her house. Dispatchers on the scanner described a possible fireball.

The outage, which affects several thousand people in the Lake Ridge area, according to the Dominion Power outage map, should be resolved by 1 a.m.

Occoquan-Woodbridge-Lorton Volunteer Fire Department apparatus responded.
