Corey Stewart To Make Campaign Announcement Today

At 1:30, Corey Stewart will announce if he is running for re-election to the county board or if he will run for the U.S. Senate.

Prince William County Board of Supervisors Chairman Corey Stewart will make an announcement regarding his campaign today.

At 1:30 p.m. Stewart is likely to announce he is either running for re-election or he is going to try for the U.S. Senate seat vacated by Democrat Jim Webb. His press conference will be at the McCoart Building.

Stewart has been chairman since 2006. He gained the national spotlight in 2008 for his active role in combating illegal immigration at the local level by supporting a set of policies that let local police officers act as federal immigrant agents when they found someone to be in the country illegally. The policies were, and still can be, highly controversial.

When Webb announced that he wouldn't run for re-election for the U.S. Senate, Stewart said during a CNN interview that he was interested in trying to win a spot on the Senate. Some politicians believed that Stewart was signalling that he had his eye on Webb's seat.
