Connolly Holds Slim Margin

Vote Count to Continue Wednesday

Rep. Gerald "Gerry" Connolly (D) and Keith Fimian (R) are in a dead heat for the 11th District House of Representative seat as of 6:24 a.m. and the final count will continue on Wednesday.

For Occoquan, Fimian brought in 574 votes, coming in at 36.30% and Connolly led the votes at 974, coming in at 61.60%. In Lake Ridge, Fimian brought in 871 votes, leading at 51.55% and Connolly brought in 775 votes, coming in at 45.85%.

Fewer than 500 votes separated Connolly and Fimian, a sure sign that the 11th Congressional District won't be decided until well past Tuesday's balloting.

"We knew it was going to be tough coming into this. We knew we had to do good in Fairfax County tonight," said state Sen. Dave Marsden, a Burke Democrat, at a Connolly rally in Falls Church. "It looks like there may be a recount, but recounts don't usually change the original outcome."

The Mason Inn on George Mason University was packed with hundreds of Fimian supporters at the official campaign party—all of whom hoped to cheer their candidate to victory. In a brief statement, Fimian said it would likely be Wednesday before the race is called either way.

The campaign would not comment on whether it will request a recount.

Election officials have already tallied around 26,000 absentee ballots, the Virginia State Board of Elections said via Twitter.

Provisional ballots in the 11th district will be counted tomorrow. In Virginia, there are no automatic recounts—only the losing candidate can request one, and that only if the final ballot count is less than 1 percent of the total vote. Since the recount cannot be made until after the vote is certified later this month, it is unlikely a recount will be officially announced any time soon.

According to state law, the apparent losing candidate can request a recount if the difference between the votes is less than 1 percent.

Don Allman, a Fairfax Station resident who attended the party on Tuesday, said he voted for Fimian because he wants "Obamacare" repealed. A Republican majority in the House of Representative could help that happen, he said.

"There are a lot of things that need to be changed," Allman said.

Jesse McDuffy, 74, a Fairfax City resident, said he voted for Fimian because he is more in touch with Northern Virginia residents.

"I got three emails a day from Keith and I got nothing from Connolly," McDuffy said. "He's going to be a dadgum good representative."
