Occoquan Elementary Holds Annual Fun Fair

Popular Fun Fair brings in many Occoquan families.

Occoquan Elementary held their annual Fun Fair the evening of Friday, June 3. This well attended event is a "great time for the Occoquan community to
come together for food, fun, games and prizes," said Anna Linton, longtime
Occoquan front office employee. Linton said that this event has been held for
more than 20 years and it is a spring tradition for Occoquan students.

While the event is run by the PTA, half the volunteers were  teachers who donated their time to run many of the activities.  They helped with sand art, temporary tattoos, painting nails, making crafts and running several games. Children were also able to enjoy events like the bean bag toss, hula hoop and basketball shoot out on the courts outside.

By far, the cake walk was the favorite activity of the evening. Natalie, who was at the event with three of her four children, said this was "a lot of fun."

PTA President, Darlene Illig said that 60 cakes were donated for the cake walk by
Occoquan families. She expected to hand out every one due to the popularity of
the game. Linton ran the game with great enthusiasm. She kept the walkers
moving in time to popular songs like, "I like To Move It, Move It" and the "Cupid Shuffle."

This is a successful fundraiser for the PTA, said Illig, usually raising approximately $3000. It is reasonably priced for families, with tickets available at five for $1 presale, and four for $1 at the door. The bake sale, concessions and silent auction also bring in revenue. Each grade level put together a themed basket to auction off, along with several from the PTA and specials teachers. There was a wide variety of themes including Beach Fun, Chocolate, Books and Family Game Night.

The Occoquan Elementary Girl Scouts put plants in decorative pots as a community service project and donated these to the Fun Fair. Families were able to use their tickets to purchase them to plant at home.

Illig said the event came together well. It took them about two months to plan everything, and 1.5 hours to set everything up in the afternoon.
