Vikings Football Focusing on ‘One Game at a Time’

The Woodbridge Senior High School football team plays fellow Cardinal District Osbourn Park on Friday.

Hot off of their win against Gar-Field High School last Friday, the Woodbridge Vikings varsity football team is “taking one game at time” this season.

Head coach Kevin Smith said Friday’s win 48-20 against Gar-Field, a historically rivaled game against the two Woodbridge schools, was important to the team’s season.

“The crowd was electric,” said Smith of the team’s first Cardinal district game. “You definitely knew it was a Woodbridge Gar-Field game. The fans were very supportive on both sides. We were fortunate enough to come out on top.”

Smith said the 3-1 Vikings had several player highlights from the game.

“Jaylen Avent had 276 yards rushing and three touchdowns, so that was pretty special,” said Smith. “Mike Majette got his first touchdown pass of the year. Evrett Edwards had a very good game receiving, he lead us for three catches for 63 yards.”

Avent and Edwards are seniors and Majette is a sophomore.

“Our offensive line did a terrific job our team ran for 476 yards as a team. We gained over 500 yards as an offense,” said Smith. “Defensively, we had Ben Funny (senior) who led the team in tackles – he had 11 tackles. It was a good team effort.”

Smith the core of the Vikings team returned this year, including skill players such as wide receivers and quarterbacks.

“We graduated three starters on the other line, so that was tough to replace this year,” said Smith. "Our new linemen are stepping in and doing a great job this year.”

“We’re gonna take it one game at a time this year, our next big goal is Osbourn Park, we’ve got them Friday,” said Smith.

In 2011, the Vikings were 6-4

The Vikings play the Osbourn Park at Woodbridge Senior High School on Friday at 7:30 p.m. The WSHS homecoming game will be played on Oct. 12 against Freedom High School.
