I think was a great decision for the safety of the Students and Staff.

the students are fustrated, parents are fustrated with mother nature. This weather has really piledRead More on the stress on everyone, but I agree, the schools need to be closed. Safety first!

Since they are not going to change the date of regularly scheduled testing I don't think that makingRead More up the days do anything good for the students. Unless these days can be made up in advance of the test (sol, ect) so my vote it to not extend school!

Most schools around the world have classes year round. We have 180 days and then aren't even goingRead More to make up the ten missed days. It's ridiculous. These kids need to be in school. Yes make up the days, go to a longer school year. Make Monday's full day, take away teacher work days and whatever else it takes. There were talks about starting before Labor Day every year - why didn't that take place? Our kids are missing out on education and they need to be in school more to make up for it.

Maybe schools should have thought of this before classes were cancelled. There's no reason kidsRead More can't go to school because of the threat of snow. And "storms" where we get 2 inches and classes cancelled are JOKE. And I'm sorry when temps are in the low 20's with windchills in the teens or single digits - that's what layers are for... wear winter clothing and dress for the weather. I have absolutely no sympathy for the kids needing to be in school longer.
School Closings, Delay Info in Prince William County

Prince William schools closing tomorrow shouldn't even be a question. Whether it is 4 inches or 10Read More inches children and parents safety should be first, as well as the teachers and staff of the schools. Everyone stay safe and warm tonight and tomorrow.
Wednesday's snow day has drained the last of Prince William County School's available hours.

I have an idea... how about if the kids "study from home" on school days. This wouldRead More involve the teacher keeping her kids organized for extra homework in the event of a day off from school. The way to do this county-wide is to mandate that the syllabus does not shift in the event of a school day and that all work is completed on time. It probably wouldn't work for the younger kids, but maybe they could have extended days. As for making up time this year, we always stayed late in the summer back in the old days.
Should the buses have rolled this week? Patch file photo.

It is ridiculous to keep kids home for cold weather. As long as the roads and parking lots areRead More clear kids should be in school. As for the walkers and kids who drive themselves, when are the parents going to take responsibility? Drive your kids to school. And it's the parents who should be sure their kids are dressed appropriately for the weather. As for the make up days, taking away a teacher work day is one thing but taking away a federal holiday shouldn't happen. Nor should extending the school year which could disrupt many summer plans.

I agree with Ms. Kelly! Additionally, not everyone in the county lives in Sterling Park or AshburnRead More Village! In more rural areas, the roads are still not the best to walk and or drive on! Thought.... If you lived in these rural areas, and you child was on the bus, the bus slid off the road and was stuck on the bus for several hours....would you complain and raise a stink? This is another reason that the school board made their decision. It is better for them to receive complaints of a handful more school days, than to have dozens of parents complaining about accidents, injuries and their childs well being. I give kudos to the board for announcing they were closing for the remainder of the week, days in advance. As this allowed us to plan, the best we could. Opposed to reacting to this information in the morning while watching the news!

Good thing we have school officials making their best professional decisions instead of a bunch ofRead More nutty parents who can't agree on anything! We should support the school system's decisions even when we don't agree. Amen.
Is it time for school, yet? Patch file photo.

Apparently the decision makers like their days off. Look, a frozen puddle, we must close the entireRead More system because someone might slip and go boom. Beyond belief. Great message to send to kids.

I think safety first - there are a lot of kids who are "walkers" and there are a lot ofRead More kids who drive themselves. I drove through our high school parking lot today and there are still some icy spots and the sidewalks are not clear. The last thing we need is broken legs and students' cars sliding into each other. One more day will get us through the weekend and, if Monday is already a teacher workday, then the students could safely come back on Tuesday. The additional rest for both students and teachers does a body good!
There's a 100 percent chance of snow in Tuesday's forecast. Patch file photo/Drew Hansen

Yes I think schools should be closed Tuesday
kathy brown January 20, 2014 at 09:12 pm
Yes, they should close on Tuesday. Storm is coming in the morning, students will have to leaveRead More school. The districit will save money on busing, meals, elec, heating by closing. The most important part is the student safety.
43 teachers would be brought in if this plan is approved. PWCS logo courtesy of PWCS.

if $3.5M would bring in an additional 43 teachers (a new 6th grade teacher in each middle school andRead More a new math teacher in each high school) just imagine for a moment what $10.5M would do for class size and student education in lieu of for a new swimming pool at one high school. In the final analysis, the answer has to be in where PWCS priorities lie.
