Visions For Vacancies: Woodbridge Blockbuster

Now that the Blockbuster on Jefferson Davis Highway has closed, what should take its place?

The Woodbridge Blockbuster location at 1345 Jefferson Davis Highway closed March 24 after the chain announced in January that they would close 300 stores across the nation. The Lake Ridge location at Dillingham Square remains open as the last Blockbuster site in the area. As a giant box store, the former Woodbridge Blockbuster has room for something big. What should go in this building once it's empty? A World Market or Pier 1 Imports? A Trader Joe's? A play space for kids?

Woodbridge Blockbuster Announces Closing Date

Jefferson Davis Highway location rolling out discounts on merchandise.

The Blockbuster Video store at 1345 Jefferson Davis Highway is selling DVDs, Blu-Rays and various fixtures at a discount in anticipation of next month's final days. The Woodbridge location will close for good March 24 after an announcement in January that the troubled chain would close 300 stores across the nation. The Lake Ridge location at Dillingham Square will remain open as the last Blockbuster site in the area. Blockbuster Video Closing 300 Stores

No word on specific locations impacted. There are two in Woodbridge/Lake Ridge area.

Blockbuster will be closing 300 of its 800 locations in the coming weeks, according to a report in The Denver Post. Specific sites have not been announced. Parent company Dish Network told the paper that 3,000 employees will lose their jobs in the process. The stores targeted reportedly include underperforming sites, as well as locations where leases are set to expire. There are two area Blockbuster locations: the Lake Ridge Blockbuster at Dillingham Square and the Woodbridge Blockbuster on Jefferson Davis Highway. A Lake Ridge employee said that site currently isn't expected to close. For decades, families would make weekly runs to the video store for entertainment.
