Creating a frugally festive home with some easy craft ideas.
The beginning of December brings an itch I'm so tempted to scratch! The craft aisles call to me and Pinterest beckons me to make those wonderful holiday crafts that I pinned oh so long ago! I've yet to find all my holiday decoration boxes, and I know I have more than enough to decorate my abode. However, every year I want something new and festive for the holidays, and that can lead to a lot of money spent on knick knacks that spend 11 months in a basement box. Rather than totally succumbing to temptation, I'm using my crafty ways for good, and finding holiday decorations that I can make using Dollar Store purchases, and items I already have around the house. So, get out your glue guns and paint brushes; it's time for some Christmas …

It's over, but we wanted to take one more final look at some untraditional Christmas traditions that seem to have been popular this year. Ugly Christmas Sweater Parties: Have you been invited to one this holiday season? Christmas sweaters were popular in the 80s, but have since gone out of style, but not for the ironically hip. Young people, who maybe never wore a holiday sweater in all seriousness, have been raiding their mom's closets and attics to show them off at parties- Ugly 80s Christmas Sweater themed holiday parties. What's the perfect hostess gift to bring to an ugly sweater party? How about a Chia pet? Doggie- Christmas Cards: Dog owners would swear that this is not in bad taste. After all, if parents can proudly display …

We know, you probably have a ton of cookie recipes scattered throughout various cookbooks stacked in your kitchen. BUT we couldn't resist giving you some more pro cookie tips from instructor and pastry chef Noree Hatheway of the local Stratford Institute. She shares with us some of her own professional insights (and recipes!) on how to make that perfect Christmas cookie. "Always be sure to chill cookie dough for a a few hours, and underbake cookies slightly, because they'll continue to cook after you pull them out of the oven," Chef Hatheway said. "And homemade cookies are like, 10 times better in taste than the store bought dough, so it's worth the effort....and these recipes are pretty simple." GINGERBREAD COOKIES 2/3 cup light brown …

We asked The Lake Ridge Nursery how to get live Christmas trees to last well into the season and beyond.
If you decide to buy a real Christmas tree this year, you want to make sure that it lasts into the season. So Patch talked to the Lake Ridge Nursery to find out how to keep those evergreen trees nice and healthy. The Lake Ridge Nursery carries two types of Christmas trees this year: Fraser and Douglas Fir. Fraser firs seem to be the overall preferred type as they are heavier and hold ornaments better, and have less shed pine shedding. Douglas firs have the advantage of being lighter with a refreshingly light, citrusy pine smell. When you buy a tree here, the nursery provides a preservative called 'Kling', that's gets absorbed right into the water and helps the tree to last longer. Chris Smith, an associate at Lake Ridge Nursery, suggests…

Patch lets you know what makes impressive and not so impressive (inappropriate) gifts for workplace gift swaps.
Along with all the gifts you need to purchase for family and friends, you may also be participating in a Secret Santa gift swap at work. Gift giving can be tricky enough for colleagues, and even trickier if you don't know them very well. Patch has some hints for what to give and what not to give as a Secret Santa gift this holiday. Don't: 1. Buy clothing, if you don't know the exact size to get. Buying something too big or too small can be an insult and clothing is very taste specific. The only exception could be something that's meant for all sizes, like a scarf or shawl. 2. Get very religious. The movement to bring holiness back to the holidays doesn't always apply to the workplace. Generic Christmas items (trees, elves, Santa…

If Santa's magical boat can zip down the river because of Christmas spirit, then we have the people of Occoquan to thank for it. Holiday spirit was yet again evident in this small, but very festive river-front town as Santa was greeted by kids and grownups alike.

Those are some excellent ideas! We do new decorations for christmas and often get ideas from homeseasons. This will be fun, maybe for the kids, Toilet paper Tube angels?
