Violent storm system causes power line damage.
Dominion Power reported a power outage in the Woodbridge area Wednesday night, impacting more than 4,000 residents, as of 9 p.m. According to the Dominion Power outage map, the outage was due to power line damage. Restoration wasn't expected until between midnight and 2 a.m. The National Weather Service predicts showers and strong winds are possible until 3 a.m. Thursday.

Sudden wind storm Friday night was one of the worst to hit Northern Virginia, leaving thousands without power.
In the aftermath of the powerful derecho storm that hit Northern Virginia Friday night, thousands are still without power three days later, suffering through high temperatures with no air-conditioning, watching food spoil and feeling disconnected without TV, Internet and in some cases phone service. On Monday afternoon, Dominion Power reported that about 160,000 in Northern Virginia were still without power. Gas prices may be going up and up, but cost of electricity, at least for Dominion customers, is dropping. The average household electricity bill is expected to drop to $105.90 in September, the company says, a 5.7 percent decrease from January 2012. The calculation is based on the an average use of 1,000 kilowatt-hours. The drop is owed largely to a decrease in Dominion's fuel rate. The proposed fuel rate is 2.706 cents per kilowatt-hour – a decrease of approximately 18 percent from the current fuel rate of 3.289 cents per kilowatt-hour, said Dominion spokeswoman Le-Ha Anderson. The adjustment is the lowest the company has proposed since 2007, Anderson said. It will result in an annual fuel revenue reduction of $388 million. In a company …

A piece of equipment on a Dominion Power substation in Lake Ridge exploded, causing a widespread power outage.
Update: Power has been restored to some residences in Lake Ridge. "We had a piece of equipment on one of our substations in the Woodbridge area blow," said Le-Ha Anderson, a spokesperson for Dominion Power. About 14,500 customers were affected initially, and the number of affected customers is now down to about 5,900 as of 9:15 p.m. "We are working right now to re-route those customers and we expect everyone's power to be back on within an hour," Anderson said. Prince William County Schools said lunch will be served and class instruction will continue.
Woodbridge Middle School is having a bit of a power hiccup this morning. Prince William County Schools said the school off of York Drive has been experiencing intermittent power outages Monday. Power has gone out twice in the last half hour.
Update: 12:42 p.m.: Power has been restored to Westridge. Original story - 12:30 p.m.: About 70 customers have lost power in the Westridge area because of a damaged power line, according to the interactive Dominion power outage map. A reader alerted us to the outage, saying that power had flickered out for a few minutes about half an hour ago, and then gone out again a few minutes later.
