Lake Ridge Middle School foreign language students showcase talents and receive recognition.
How appropriate that on Thursday, Cinco de Mayo, Lake Ridge Middle School hosted its Annual World Languages Specialty Program Extravaganza. During the program students performed skits, musical selections, two native French dances, one song performed in American Sign Language with instrumental accompaniment, and a tribute to Roberto Clemente, Latin American professional baseball player. 13-year-old Megan Onyundo is a whiz kid.
Megan Onyundo needed an idea for her Girl Scout project to earn her a silver pin award and propel her from cadet to senior scout. That is when she remembered a man in her neighborhood who offered $5 to paint house numbers on the curbs so 911 first responders could identify homes easier during emergencies. Onyundo decided to make curb painting her project. She contacted the fire department and is now working with the local government to find out which communities in Lake Ridge are in most need of this service. She will not charge any fee, but will offer her time and energy as a way to make her community safer. The eighth grader at Lake Ridge Middle School is enthusiastic about spearheading a project of her own. “We’ve done service hours…

Principal Jo Fitzgerald credits changes to math curriculum with achievement of School of Excellence.
Lake Ridge Middle School was presented with the award for Prince William County School of Excellence. This is the third time Lake Ridge has been honored, and it is one of only three middle schools in the county to receive the award this year. Principal Jo Fitzgerald stated that she is "very proud," yet explained that it was not an easy feat. The School of Excellence Award is given to schools in the county that meet certain criteria, which includes evaluations of annual yearly progress, and receiving a sore of 90 out of 100 on Strategic Plan based measures. LRMS is one of many schools to adopt the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program. Designed by Norwegian psychologist Dr. Dan Olweus, the program educates students and authority figures on how to recognize and decrease bullying within schools. Jim Dutrow, an administrative assignment teacher, leads the Olweus program at LRMS. "(The program) definitely had a positive effect on the school. It gives kids the tools to help them deal with bullying, or help them reach out to adults, when they see bullying going on," Dutrow said. He further stated that the …
