Potomac River May Lose a Friend: Virginia

Governor's budget would take Virginia out of the Interstate Commission on the Potomac River Basin.

Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell, in a cost-saving effort, is taking Virginia out of a 71-year-old multi-state compact to clean and maintain the Potomac River. The Governor's $85 billion biennial budget package does not include $151,500 to fund the Commonwealth's membership in the Interstate Commission on the Potomac River Basin.   "Our membership fee in ICPRB is expensive, particularly when compared to other interstate organizations—in fact, at least three times the cost of other groups," wrote Virginia Secretary of Natural Resources Doug Domenech in an Oct. 27 letter to Del. Scott Surovell (D-44). "This membership fee represents the equivalent cost for two full-time state employees who could be working on core water quality programs within …

Bonus Weekend for Boaters

Warm weather brings out boaters, t-shirts, shorts and flip-flops

Starting at noon on Saturday, Nov. 13, crabhouse and Potomac River hangout Tim's Rivershore drew area boaters for one last get together to say goodbye to the boating season. The chilly weather typical for November was substituted with a sunny, mild weekend as boaters milled in the water and inside of Tim's having one last water-based party.  As one boater put it, "If it weren't for the color of the leaves you would have thought it was the beginning of summer and not midway through autumn."  Owner Tim Bauckman constructed a bonfire for the evening ('Smores!) and brought in a musician to entertain the crowd.  A half-dozen crews stuck it out for the whole night and were welcomed with a gorgeous sunrise Sunday morning.
