On a Full Tank: Running With the RidgeRunners

Patch contributor and RidgeRunners Club president writes of the group's progress since its July reunification.

It’s official.  I’ve missed my Patch deadline for an article, again.  You could say that I’m running late, which, as it so happens, is exactly the case.  Since taking on the role of president of the Lake Ridge RidgeRunners Club in July, I’ve had little else on the brain.  Some nights, I even dream that I’m running long distances on air.  It’s become an obsession. I wrote an article in late June reporting on the state of the RidgeRunners Club, which I joined in 2006, and I invited readers to rally on a Saturday evening in hopes of rebooting that 30-year-old running group.  I envisioned more than 20 eager participants showing up for that first run.  Little did I know that only three women would accompany me and only because I told them about…

A Fat Runner's Guide to Being a Fat Runner

When I first started telling my friends and family that I've taken to the name " The Fat Runner," they seemed shocked and a bit mortified that I would call myself such a thing.  One of my friends seemed genuinely upset saying she felt like I was putting myself down.  Not true at all!   I call myself a fat runner well, because I am but not just that.  I say it with pride. How many fat runners do you know?  There aren't a lot of us and that is a shame!  We've bought into the idea that somehow we can't enjoy running too and it is my hope that when you read about this fat runner, it changes your idea of who can be a runner. Ilene, you should be so proud! What a great thing you are doing for your health. I did the same walk/run thing a couple of years ago for the first time. Although I had never been a runner, I figured I could do anything for a minute. And then another minute, and then another minute ... It really works!   more ›
