ReplyI will miss Borders' free rewards program. I have saved a lot of money there over the years. Barnes and Noble is too expensive for me. Good luck to all the employees who will lose their jobs.

On the article Springfield Mall Redevelopment May Start This Fall

ReplyMore than anything, people need to feel safe at Springfield Mall. One of my friends was robbed at gunpoint there and we know the mall has a crime problem. Who can forget about the woman who was carjacked from there and later killed? Many people I know refuse to step foot in there. How do the owners and the county plan to address this problem? They can make it the next Tysons Corner but if people don't feel safe, it won't do any good.

On the article Video: Parents, Elected Officials Rally for Full Day Kindergarten

ReplyA Patch article from January quotes a Ravensworth Elementary School kindergarten teacher as saying half-day kindergarten students "are held to exactly the same standards as full-day students" even though the full-day students get an additional 517 hours of instructional time. She went on to say that half-day teachers must impart the same curriculum in half the time. The same article quotes a George Mason University professor as saying "today, kindergarten students are expected to achieve what most of us did in first grade." And even a county official says it's the right thing to do. So while I too question the instructional load on children this age and believe we might be asking too much, too soon, it's only fair to finally give all Fairfax County kindergarten students the same opportunities.

ReplySorry Neighbor but you couldn't be more wrong. Times have changed and students in half-day kindergarten get a full day of work crammed into that short day, and it's even worse on Mondays when they go just a couple of hours. Kindergarten is not day care and it's not playtime anymore.

ReplyNever mind the joy of getting to the blossoms. I rode Metro there with my daughter two years on a Saturday and I still have nightmares about the experience. And yes she begged for food, which I would have gladly provided had there been any nearby. Thanks for the laugh and the alternatives.

ReplyMy daughter attended half-day kindergarten at a school that still does not have full-day kindergarten and it was an awful experience for all of us. At her school, half-day kindergarten is not a half-day of work, it's a full day crammed into half a day, and half of that on Mondays. It was a struggle for her to keep up. It seems that kindergarten has become the new first grade and I believe it's unfair to deny this instruction to some of our children. This is not about helping working parents; it's about what's best for our children in this day and age.

ReplyI agree with Michelle Carr. My daughter is now 12 and enjoys looking at the pictures from her birthday parties. She even swears she has memories of some of them. Yes they were chaotic and I probably was crazy for doing it but I only have one child and I have some great memories.

Traffic will still back up because of the light at Popes Head Road and the blind approach, especially as you are traveling southbound. I hope they can take that one out in the future.
