Weekend Planner: Carnival, BBQ, and Canoe Class

This weekend, get out of the house with one of ten featured events.

Where/When: 3815 Marquis Pl, Lake Ridge. Saturday, May 21, 11 a.m.- 3 p.m.

Why Go: Girl Scout Troop 1839 is hosting a Carnival to complete their Bronze Award. There will be a DJ, McDonald's, games, relays, an auction for different baskets (Tastefully Simple, Avon, etc.), and a bake sale. All proceeds will be to benefit www.cookiesforkidscancer.org.

Why Go: Holy Family Catholic School is hosting their second annual Falcon 5K and 1 Mile Fun Run to promote fitness and wellness in our community and help raise funds to support their athletic program. The 1 Mile Fun Run begins at 8:00 a.m. and the 5K begins at 8:20 a.m. You must be registered to run and all are welcome.  For more information call or email: 703-670-3138; falcon5k@holyfamilydalecity.org.

Where/When: Occoquan Bible Church, 3700 Old Bridge Rd, Woodbridge. Saturday, May 21, Noon–4 p.m.

Why Go: It's a family-friendly event with free food and live music.

 Where/When: Prince of Peace United Methodist Church 6299 Token Forest Dr, Manassas. Saturday, May 21, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Why Go: Help collect food for the hungry in our community. Bring non-perishable food or monetary donations to benefit ACTS Food Bank. Drop off your donations and then enjoy great music on the lawn. Bring your blanket, chairs, and picnic food/drinks.

Where/When: , 12350 Cotton Mill Dr, Lake Ridge. Saturday, May 21, Noon–2 p.m.

Why Go: Adults 18 years and older are invited to to brush up on their canoe skills. Participants will learn new techniques to help them go in a straight line and to avoid switching sides all the time. Turn this into something fun with a friend, significant other, or family member by bringing them along to learn as well, then take trips together in the future. 

Pricing: $15.

 Where/When: , 13065 Chinn Park Dr. Saturday, May 21, 10 a.m. - 3 p.m.

Why Go: Give the gift of life by donating blood. Call 866-256-6371 or register online at www.inova.org/donateblood. Walk-ins are welcome, but appointments are given priority. You must weigh at least 110 pounds, be healthy for 3 or more days, and present a photo ID. Make sure to eat a meal and drink plenty of fluids 6 hours prior to donating.

Where/When: , 12934 Harbor Dr, Woodbridge. Saturday, May 21, 10 a.m.

Why Go: This is a charity ride in the name of Sally Watts, a retired PWC school teacher who died of ALS (Lou Gehrigs disease) last year. The ride begins at the All American Steakhouse in Merchants Plaza in Lake Ridge and goes to Solomons Island, MD. Everyone is invited. All proceeds from sales of t-shirts and wristbands go to the local chapter of ALS. Additional information can be found at the All American Steakhouse or by emailing us at sallysride@live.com.

Why Go: The ladies auxiliary is pleased to announce our Spring Craft Show on Saturday, May 21, 2011 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.. Featuring 30+ vendors and auxiliary bake sale. Featured items: photography, painting, pottery, crocheting, knitting, jewelry, candles, artwork and so much more. All proceeds raised will go to support the Lorton Volunteer Fire Department and community. Limited vendor spaces are still available. Why Go: is looking for volunteers of all ages to complete indoor and outdoor projects to help make the park a little more beautiful on the 3rd Saturday of each month over the summer.  Reservations are not required to participate, but volunteers should call to sign up for the days that they would like to help out. Volunteers will meet at the pro shop at 10 a.m. If need be, volunteers should call and check out receiving community service hours for participating.

Where/When: , 3966 Old Bridge Rd, Lake Ridge. Sunday, May 22, 11 a.m.–1 p.m.

Why Go: Come bid on Redskins tickets, artwork, food, and many more items. Free refreshments. Proceeds benefit OBUMC missions programs.
