Prince William Art Society Offers Scholarships

The society will award two $1000 scholarships in 2012 to high school seniors planning to pursue Fine Arts or Arts Education in their bachelor's degree.

Update: The Prince William Art Society is now accepting letters of intent.

The following information was contributed by Jewell Burns and Emily Hawes with the Prince William Art Society:

"The Prince William Art Society will be awarding two $1,000.00 scholarships this academic year to students in the 12th grade preparing to pursue a bachelor’s  degree in Fine Arts or Art Education.

Scholarship Application Procedures: Students should send an Intent To Apply letter postmarked by March 12, 2012  containing a simple statement of intent, such as: “I intend to apply for the Prince William Society Art Scholarship," along with their name and contact information so they can be contacted with any necessary changes or updated information and to ensure that their final portfolios can be returned to them after the selection process. Students should prepare and mail or hand deliver their final application materials to be received on or before April 10, 2012.

Final Application Materials Must Include:

  1. Teacher Recommendation: The student must be recommended by her/his art instructor based on the student's talent, potential, and their desire to go forward in the field of Visual Arts. This recommendation must be signed by the art instructor and must include the art instructor's contact information (email and phone number).

   2. Student Statement of Future Intent:  The student should prepare a letter addressed to the Prince William Art Society indicating why he/she should receive the scholarship, and how the scholarship will assist her/him in their career plans. The letter should state the college where the student has been accepted, and their planned major. The letter should be signed by the student and indicate the high school the student currently attends.

   3. Portfolio:   The student should submit a digital portfolio that includes five pieces of their original artwork in the student's choice of media. The portfolio should be on CD/DVD at least 5x7 / 300 pixels. Each art piece should be identified by media and date of completion.   No commercial images will be accepted and any detection of alteration to the digital images will result in immediate disqualification.

A panel of artists from the Prince William Art Society will review all application materials submitted and make the final selections. Once finalists have been identified, the panel will meet and interview the finalists. Place and times will be announced at a later date.

Application materials will be returned upon request and letters sent to all applicants. The scholarship winners and their families will then be notified.

The scholarships will be awarded at a reception held at Canterbury Woods Community Center, on May 16, at 8:00 pm. during the regularly held monthly meeting of the Prince William Art Society.   Any questions may be addressed to the PWAS Scholarship Committee by e-mail at: prattburns@gmail.com or emhawes@comcast.net."
