Small Business Resolutions: Spiral Creations Renovating, Expanding

Kathy and Tom Alden at Spiral Creations are expanding their business in January.

Since Kelly Campbell has vacated the shop next to Spiral Creations to pursue her art business online, Spiral Creations owners Kathy and Tom Alden are expanding their shop to include the former Kelly's Artbox storefront.

The renovations started this week and will run at least two weeks, Kathy Alden said. The store will be closed during renovations.

"I'm going to be taking down walls, and painting, carpeting and putting a fresh face on everything," Alden said. "We'll be reopening toward the end of January."

With the added space, Spiral Creations will expand its inventory, offering customers more of the same handmade, custom and vintage jewelry, art and accessories. Some of Campbell's merchandise will be for sale on consignment at Spiral Creations. And Campbell will assist Alden with her Etsy shop.

Alden looks forward to having an office once the renovations are complete.

"I'll hopefully have time to create more," she said.

Alden also recently hired Kay Pietrewicz of Haunted Occoquan to help out part-time in the shop.

"Before Christmas, we were able to stay open seven days a week," Alden said. Alden hopes to continue staying open at least six days a week for the rest of the winter.

This renovation is the third expansion in as many years. Alden credits the success of Spiral Creations to her faithful customer base.

"I like that we've been building relationships," she said. "When you have people that come in and wish you a Merry Christmas — and they're not even there to shop, they're just there to wish you a Merry Christmas — that's a good feeling."
