Weekend Travel: Weather and Closures

As you head into this weekend, make your travel in and around the region easier by using this handy guide to closures in the area. As always, you can check live traffic information on the Patch Commute tab.

Though there is a for the area today, tomorrow and Sunday promise to be mostly sunny for your trip to the Occoquan Craft Show.

Drivers can expect up to two of three lanes to be closed overnight this weekend on northbound Interstate 95 over Russell Road (Exit 148) as crews mill and pave the bridge deck. Work will take place from 8 p.m. until 6 a.m. Friday and Saturday nights (June 1-2), and may continue Sunday night, June 3 from 8 p.m. until 4 a.m. Monday morning.

Crews are scheduled to mill and pave the southbound bridge overnight next weekend, June 8-10, weather permitting.

I-495 north/west on the Inner Loop will be fully closed near I-395 the night of June 3 for overhead sign installation. The ramp from I-95 to that section of I-495 will also be closed.

Other major highway closures between 9:30 p.m. and 5 a.m. include: 

  • I-495 south from Exit 44, Georgetown Pike (Route 193) to Oak St. overpass. Three lanes closed during the night of June 2 and June 3 for overhead sign and paving work. Expect intermittent full road closures of up to 30 minutes after midnight.
  • I-495 south to Exit 45B, Dulles Connector Road (Route 267) east. Ramp closed Monday-Friday for overhang removal. Traffic will be directed to continue south to Exit 46B, Chain Bridge Road (Route 123) north and follow signs to Dulles Connector Road (Route 267) east.
  • Dulles Connector Road (Route 267) west at I-495. Road closed Monday-Friday nights for bridge painting. Traffic will be directed to take I-495 north to Exit 44, Georgetown Pike (Route 193) west, stay to the left, follow signs to I-495 south and take Exit 45A, Dulles Connector Road (Route 267) west.
  • Dulles Connector Road (Route 267) east at I-495. Two left lanes closed Sunday-Saturday nights for overhang removal. Expect intermittent full road closures of up to 30 minutes after midnight.
  • Dulles Connector Road (Route 267) east to I-495 north and south. Ramps closed Monday-Friday nights for overhead sign work. Traffic will be directed to continue west to Exit 19B, Chain Bridge Road (Route 123) south and follow signs to I-495 north or south.
  • I-495 north to Exit 45A, Dulles Connector Road (Route 267) west. Ramp closed Monday-Friday nights for bridge painting. Traffic will be directed to continue north to Exit 44, Georgetown Pike (Route 193) west, stay to the left, follow signs to I-495 south and take Exit 45A, Dulles Connector Road (Route 267) west.
  • I-495 south to Exit 46 A or B, Chain Bridge Road (Route 123) south or north. Ramps closed Sunday-Saturday nights for paving. Traffic will be directed to Exit 47A, Leesburg Pike (Route 7) west, make a right on International Drive north and follow signs to Chain Bridge Road (Route 123).
  • I-495 north to Exit 46B, Chain Bridge Road (Route 123) north. Ramp closed Sunday-Saturday nights for paving. Traffic will be directed to take Exit 46A, Chain Bridge Road (Route 123) south, stay to the right, follow signs to I-495 south, stay to the right, and enter onto Chain Bridge Road (Route 123) north.
  • Chain Bridge Road (Route 123) north to I-495 south. Ramp closed Sunday-Saturday nights for bridge painting. Traffic will be directed to continue north to I-495 north, stay to the right to enter onto Chain Bridge Road (Route 123) south and follow signs to I-495 south.
  • Chain Bridge Road (Route 123) north and south at Westpark Drive overpass. Two right lanes closed Sunday-Saturday nights for signal work. 
  • I-495 south to Exit 47B, Leesburg Pike (Route 7) east. Ramp closed Sunday-Saturday nights for paving. Traffic will be directed to take Exit 47B, Leesburg Pike (Route 7) west and make a U-turn at International Drive onto Leesburg Pike (Route 7) east.
  • I-495 north to Exit 47A and B, Leesburg Pike (Route 7) west and east. Ramps closed Sunday-Saturday nights for paving. Traffic will be directed to continue north to Exit 46A, Chain Bridge Road (Route 123) south, make a left onto International Drive south and follow signs to Leesburg Pike (Route 7).
  • Leesburg Pike (Route 7) west and east to I-495 north. Ramp closed Sunday-Saturday nights for paving. Traffic will be directed to take International Drive north, make a right onto Chain Bridge Road (Route 123) north and follow signs to I-495 north.
  • Leesburg Pike (Route 7) west and east to I-495 south. Ramps closed Sunday-Saturday nights for sign work and paving. Traffic will be directed to make a right onto International Drive north, make a right onto Chain Bridge Road (Route 123) north and follow signs to I-495 south.

According to Virginia Megaprojects, there will be temporary full road closures lasting up to half an hour on:

  • I-495 north from Robinson Terminal to Georgetown Pike 
  • I-495 south from Georgetown Pike to Heming Avenue underpass
  • Dulles Toll Road East at I-495
  • I-66 west from Leesburg Pike to Gallows Road overpass
  • I-66 east from Nutley Street to I-495
  • Lee Highway between Hartland Road and Fairview Park Drive
  • Braddock Road east and west between Port Royal Road and I-495 

In the Lake Ridge area, alternating lanes of Old Bridge Road are shut down Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for ongoing utility and road widening work. For more county and regional road and lane closures, see VDOT's spreadsheet.
