Speak Out: Is the Occoquan Reservoir a Good Fishing Spot?

Someone on Yahoo! Answers wants to know.

Would you recommend the Occoquan Reservoir as a fishing spot? A Yahoo! Answers user named Mitchell wants to know.

The first and only responder argued that fishing in the Occoquan Reservoir is "a waste."

"You can't eat what you catch it's contaminated and there's signs for it all over the place in the parks that it runs through [sic]," the responder said. "If you do fish you'll have to toss it back in which would probably kill the fish."

The responder closed by telling Mitchell to "find a nice clean river / lake to fish in."

I know many of you fish in the Occoquan Reservoir—what are the pros and cons? Is this an unfair characterization of a local fishing spot?

The question was asked 15 hours ago, and it will expire in three days.

For anyone with the money to buy a bass boat, the Potomac River is a much better fishery. But Occoquan is a pretty good fishery if you know what you're doing. They allow only up to 10 HP, so it's a jonboat lake. It has a good largemouth population and good catfish. Also a good crappie population. You can rent a boat and a trolling motor for the day if you don't own a boat, I know Lake Ridge rents boats and I believe Fountainhead does too. As far as keeping fish --- I wouldn't keep a Potomac fish either, I'm strictly a catch and release guy, but if you're looking to keep and eat your fish then yeah you might want to fish somewhere else.
